A law graduate may spend years studying judgments, legal principles and statutes, yet the final step towards regular courtroom practice can still feel uncertain. The All India Bar Examination is that important professional checkpoint. It does not ask candidates to write long university-style answers; instead, it tests whether they can locate, understand and apply essential legal provisions under time pressure.
For candidates preparing in India, knowing the AIBE Exam Syllabus 2026 is especially important because all subjects do not carry equal weightage. Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure and the new criminal laws deserve considerably more attention than smaller areas such as Cyber Law or Intellectual Property Law. The latest official syllabus for AIBE XXI also continues to test both the older criminal statutes and the new Bharatiya criminal laws, so selective preparation can create avoidable gaps.

AIBE 2026 Exam Pattern
The AIBE XXI paper contains 100 objective questions, with each correct response carrying one mark. Candidates receive three hours to complete the paper. No mark is deducted for an incorrect response, which means candidates can attempt every question after using elimination and checking the relevant Bare Act.
The examination is conducted through a printed question booklet and an OMR answer sheet. Candidates must carefully enter the correct booklet set code and roll number because an error in these details can affect evaluation. Only a blue or black ballpoint pen should be used for marking responses.
Although AIBE is commonly described as an open-book examination, candidates cannot carry coaching books, handwritten notes, commentaries or electronic devices. The permitted study material is limited to Bare Acts without notes and comments, subject to the examination-day instructions.

High-Weightage AIBE Syllabus Topics
The four largest areas—Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure, Civil Procedure and criminal substantive laws—together contribute 38 questions. Evidence Law, Family Law and the combined group of Contract, Property, Specific Relief and Negotiable Instruments add another 24 questions. Strong preparation in these areas can therefore cover a large part of the paper.
Constitutional Law
Candidates should revise Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, Fundamental Duties, constitutional remedies, writs, Parliament, State Legislatures, executive powers, judiciary, federal relations, emergency provisions and constitutional amendments. Important constitutional judgments should be understood through the principles they established.
Criminal Laws
The syllabus includes the Indian Penal Code along with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Code of Criminal Procedure along with the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Evidence Act along with the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
Candidates should compare old and new provisions, important definitions, offences, punishments, arrest, bail, investigation, trial procedure, burden of proof, admissions, confessions and electronic evidence.
Civil Procedure and Core Private Laws
For CPC, focus on jurisdiction, res judicata, res sub judice, pleadings, summons, temporary injunctions, appeals, review, revision and execution.
Contract Law preparation should cover offer, acceptance, consideration, capacity, breach, indemnity, guarantee, bailment and agency. Property Law, Specific Relief and Negotiable Instruments should be revised through frequently tested provisions.
Other Important Subjects in AIBE Syllabus 2026
Family Law includes marriage, divorce, maintenance, adoption, guardianship, succession and personal-law principles. Professional Ethics requires close reading of the Bar Council of India Rules, duties towards clients and courts, advertising restrictions, conflicts of interest and professional misconduct.
Candidates should also prepare arbitration procedure, legal services and settlement mechanisms, principles of administrative action, PIL rules, tortious liability, motor accident compensation, consumer remedies, labour protections, taxation basics, environmental laws, company-law fundamentals, cyber offences, land acquisition and intellectual property rights.
How to Use Bare Acts During the AIBE Exam
Carrying several Bare Acts is useful only when candidates can locate provisions quickly. Before the examination, mark index pages with simple removable tabs, practise searching by section number and understand the structure of every major Act. Do not depend on reading complete chapters during the paper.
A practical approach is to answer direct questions first, solve provision-based questions with the help of Bare Acts and return to doubtful conceptual questions later. Keep the last 10 to 15 minutes for checking the OMR sheet, booklet code and unanswered questions.
AIBE 2026 Preparation Strategy
Start with subjects carrying eight or ten questions and prepare smaller subjects afterwards. Solve previous papers to understand whether questions are provision-based, case-based or conceptual.
Maintain a short notebook containing landmark cases, confusing section numbers and differences between the old and new criminal laws. Candidates should also practise one complete 100-question paper within three hours. A mock test taken casually does not reveal OMR mistakes or the time lost while searching through Bare Acts.
